Sony Corporation is a major global corporate presence in today's marketplace. The company was founded in 1946 as a telecommunications engineering company known as Totsuko. It launched its first magnetic recording tape and tape recorder in 1950. Totsuko (later Sony) is characterized by continuous innovation in many electronic areas including audio, recording, and TVs. Sony also entered the music industry in a joint venture with CBS in 1968 and then broke further into the entertainment industry by acquiring Columbia Pictures in 1991 and MGM in 2005. In the late 90s Sony entered the home PC market with its VAIO series. The company has also been a leader in format innovation: from magnetic tape, to CDs, to DVDs, and Blu-ray.
